Cover Letters: The First Impression

A cover letter is an official letter to the employer which basically talks about the position you are applying for. But generally candidates do mistake by taking cover letter for granted. In this way, candidates loose an opportunity of introducing oneself to the employer. A good cover letter can attract the employer very well and thus put you on a competitive edge

The cover letter actually highlights key points of the resume. It is addressed to a specific employer and mailed in the same envelope with your resume.

While framing a cover letter, one should keep in mind  following points.

In order to make a cover letter effective, one should try to customize the letter according to the company. Such efforts show your professionalism and your seriousness towards the career. Further, try to address a cover letter to a particular individual of the company.

A cover letter is actually a brief introduction of your resume but not the resume. So, it should be to the point. Clearly specify the job title, your career highlights and do mention your skills and experiences which can prove yourself as a  worthy addition to the company.

Try not to give any pessimistic information in the cover letter or unnecessary personal information like why you left your previous company or don’t spell bad words about your previous employer.

Salary requirements or salary history should be included in the cover letter only if a prospective employer requests it

Give complete and clear information regarding your address, phone number, e-mail ids etc. Further, do clearly specify that when you are available for the personal interview.

Try to give serious thought while writing a cover letter.

Try to put not more than three paragraphs in the cover letter. Introductory paragraph in which we state reason of writing to the employer like “Please find enclosed CV which I am forwarding for the post of……”. Then come to  main body which will include your career highlights, skills , experiences and other relevant information. Last would be a closing paragraph which should ask for the positive response from the recipient.

Use good quality paper for cover letter as well as for resume.

Lastly, Cover letter provides you  an  opportunity to make an impression on the employer, so do register it. And make sure that you generate enough interest in him to read your application further.
